Is there a way that we can speed up our metabolism and be burning more calories throughout the day naturally?
It seems too good to be true…
Can it be possible to just change how your body works and lose more weight without even noticing?
Well, lets first start off with the basics and see what difference we can make.
What is our metabolism?
In simple terms, our metabolism is basically like our own mini personal trainer.
They live inside us are working non-stop burning calories.
They work all day and all night trying to shift some fat.
This is your metabolism.
It’s all the work your body does during your daily processes such as-
Everything your body does takes some energy to do.
And all of this added together is what makes up our metabolism.
Can we actually make a difference?
If metabolism is a sum of all of our body’s natural processes, can we actually change it?
Well, it is based mainly on our gender, body size, age and genetics but there is room to improve it.
Although you cannot burn a measurable number more calories by thinking harder, you can burn more by altering your daily lifestyle.
And we would be silly not to try.
If you could burn more calories all day long, even while you are asleep or sitting at work, wouldn’t you want to?
Is my metabolism making me fat?
It isn’t unusual for people’s metabolism to be blamed if they are struggling to lose weight.
But there is not much evidence that supports this.
Usually, overweight people have higher metabolisms than thinner people.
This is because they require more energy to carry out basic functions in a larger body.
Usually, the main reason is that they eat too much.
The best thing to do would be to write down exactly what you eat every day and track your calories in an app like MyFitnessPal.
Keeping track of your calories could show how you are eating more than you even realised.
Unfortunately, your metabolism cannot be to blame for your weight loss struggle.
However, we can use these simple tips to help improve our metabolism alongside a better diet to start losing weight gradually.
How do we speed up our metabolism?
There are a number of easy ways you can increase your metabolism.
A lot of them don’t take much work and can easily be added to your lifestyle.
First off though I want to warn you.
You could have the best metabolism in the world, but if you spend your days eating pizza and drinking beer, this won’t make a huge difference.
Boosting your metabolism is useful to help lose an extra few pounds, yet it should be done alongside you exercising and eating good quality food.
If you are looking for a way to improve your weight loss efforts alongside your diet and activity then here are my 4 ways to increase metabolism…
Start with a good breakfast
You’ve been asleep all night and not had anything to eat.
Your body is starting to slow all its processes down so it is burning fewer calories.
If you go un-fed, it will keep slowing down and so reduce your metabolism.
The best way to prevent this is to top it up with a healthy breakfast.
Once the body realises that it doesn’t have to go into starvation mode, it is quickly happy to run at full speed again and burn calories.
Just make sure the breakfast is a healthy one.
Build some muscle
This is definitely one of the most important ones.
Lifting weights (or bodyweight) will help you build muscle which in turn will make your body burn more calories.
Muscle cells burn around 4 times as many calories as fat cells.
So not only are we speeding our metabolism up, we are also-
- toning up
- burning calories exercising
- and maintaining muscle we already have
As we get older we naturally lose muscle and gain fat (middle-aged spread)
But we can try to combat it and even reverse it and exercise and build muscle is the way to do it.
Enjoy a glass of cold water (or 8)
Well not only is it essential for our bodies to survive but it also contains 0 calories.
You can drink as much water as you want and you won’t gain any fat (note: you could gain weight temporarily)
It’s the healthiest beverage out there and it can help make our bodies work harder.
Having cold water means, not only are we consuming something our bodies have to digest, but if it is cold, our bodies must work to warm it up to our internal temperature.
Drinking more water is possibly one of the easiest ways to boost your metabolism and, although the extra calories it burns don’t amount to much, it can add up to extra pounds lost.
Plus, while you’re drinking water you are not drinking anything else that could be full of calories.
Go to bed
It seems contradictory (since you’re doing less) but sleeping more can help you burn more calories.
Having less sleep can affect the hormones which regulate energy use and appetite.
So not only will less sleep mean you make bad food choices, you’ll probably have low energy levels and so your metabolism slows down too.
Try aim to get 8 hours of sleep every night and keep the metabolism going.
Also, it could help reduce the grouchiness.
It's not so hard
Changing up your metabolism, so it works harder meaning you burn more calories, isn't a lot of effort.
There are also many other ways in which you can boost your metabolism, but these are the ones that I would recommend you change, not just to improve your metabolism but to lose weight in general.
It can be done with some small changes.
Just remember that you need to be active and eating well too.
